Composite balustrade kits: planning and installation checks

Plan your balustrade as a complete system: sections, posts, rails, fittings and the structure beneath it. Status offers standard and premium co-extrusion kits listed as 1.5m sections, with Full Kit and Extra Post Kit options.

Use this guide to prepare the layout and identify the information needed for fitting. Obtain the matching kit instructions and confirm the required height, loading, post spacing and anchorage for the site before installation. Nominal section width is not a post-centre measurement.

1. Draw the full layout

Mark every straight section, corner, end and change in level. Note the surface below each post and how the edge of the deck is supported. Decide where gates or steps need a separate detail rather than assuming a straight kit can be adapted.

Record the exact range and colour. Standard and premium co-extrusion components should not be mixed unless their compatibility has been confirmed.

2. Check the kit and extra posts

Open the selected product and check whether you are ordering a Full Kit or an Extra Post Kit. Compare the delivered parts with the kit list before cutting or drilling. Different kit versions can contain different numbers of posts, spindles and fittings.

  • Count the sections required from the approved set-out.
  • Identify all end and corner posts separately.
  • Confirm which posts and fittings are supplied with each selected kit.
  • Check whether anchors for the actual base are supplied or must be specified separately.

3. Prepare tools and the supporting structure

Have the matching instructions, tape measure, level, suitable drill and bits, marking tools and the specified fasteners ready. Use the tool maker's protective equipment and handling guidance. Only cut components where the system instructions permit it.

A post connection must transfer load into a suitable supporting structure. Decorative fascia or deck boards alone do not establish a suitable anchorage. Have the support, edge distances and fasteners confirmed before setting out the posts.

4. Follow the matching assembly sequence

Set out and secure the post bases to the confirmed detail. Check the posts are plumb, then fit sleeves, covers and rail connections in the sequence supplied for that kit. Assemble the lower rail, spindles and upper rail as instructed, checking that each connection is fully engaged.

Use the supplied drawing for bracket heights, drilling positions and spindle arrangement. Do not transfer measurements from a photograph or another kit. Fit finishing caps after the connections have been checked.

5. Check before use

  • Post bases and rail connections are secure and match the approved fixing detail.
  • The final height, openings and layout meet the specification for the location.
  • All parts are accounted for and there are no damaged or loose components.
  • The installer has completed the required checks before the area is used.
